Comparing quotations for structural engineering

Two prices are comparable only when the work behind them is clear. A useful quotation identifies calculations, drawings, required inputs and aftercare. Compare the scope before focusing solely on a starting price.

Compare the components of the appointment

Check which elements are included: a beam alone, or relevant supports, connections and foundations too? Ask whether structural drawings are included and what delivery status is intended. Identify the available input records. An offer assuming complete reliable drawings may cover different work from one including inspection or investigation. Compare those differences rather than assuming every engineer has priced an identical appointment.

Ask how uncertainty and changes are handled

Discuss missing drawings, unexpected existing conditions and later layout changes. Ask how additional work is proposed and approved. Compare aftercare as well: which queries are covered, and when does a municipal request fall within the agreed guarantee? A general promise is less useful than a defined process. Compare the desired programme with the dates by which you must provide information.

Give each provider the same brief

Use the same current plan, description and document set when requesting several proposals. Identify any architect, contractor or supplier already involved and who coordinates their information. Clarify omitted items before choosing a provider. Keep the accepted quotation with the appointment and subsequent updates. Prices on our costs page are commercial starting points; the project quotation defines the actual deliverables and agreed fee.

Practical checklist

  • Compare calculations and drawings
  • Identify investigation and exclusions
  • Read change and aftercare arrangements
  • Use an identical brief for comparison
Please note
A low starting price says little about total project costs without a defined scope.
