Structural glossary
Portal frame
A framework of beams and columns resisting forces together.
Technical context
Connection stiffness helps determine its behaviour. A simple beam-and-column arrangement is not automatically a stable portal frame.
Where might you encounter this?
This term is relevant to, among other things, steel structures. The detailed design depends on your project's information and assumptions.
